Does Gibrat’s law hold for Swedish energy firms?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Gibrat’s law predicts that firm growth is purely random and should be independent of firm size. We use a random effects–random coefficient model to test whether Gibrat’s law holds on average in the studied sample as well as at the individual firm level in the Swedish energymarket. No study has yet investigatedwhetherGibrat’s law holds for individual firms, previous studies having instead estimated whether the law holds on average in the samples studied. The present results support the claim that Gibrat’s law is more likely to be rejected ex ante when an entire firm population is considered, butmore likely to be confirmed expost aftermarket selection has “cleaned” the original population of firms or when the analysis treats more disaggregated data. From a theoretical perspective, the results are consistent with models based on passive and active learning, indicating a steady state in the firm expansion process and that Gibrat’s law is violated in the short term but holds in the long term once firms have reached a steady state. These results indicate that approximately 70% of firms in the Swedish energy sector are in steady state, with only random fluctuations in size around that level over the 15 studied years.

Gibrat’s Law: Are the Services Different?
Several noted surveys on intra-industry dynamics have recently reached the conclusion from a large body of evidence that Gibrat’s Law does not hold. However, almost all of these studies have been based on manufacturing. There are compelling reasons to doubt whether these findings hold for the services. In this paper we examine whether the basic tenet underlying Gibrat’s Law – that growth rates ...

Defending Gibrat’s Law as a Long-Run Regularity According to Gibrat’s Law of Proportionate Effect, the growth rate of a given firm is independent of its size at the beginning of the period examined. While earlier studies tended to confirm the Law, more recent research generally rejects it. This paper reconciles these two streams of literature, taking into account the role of market selection an...
متن کاملPanel unit root tests of firm size and its growth
This paper investigates Gibrat’s law by using a panel unit root test, as a panel unit root can increase power in contrast to a conventional individual ADF test. At first this paper uses the panel unit root test to testify Gibrat’s law under independent and identical distribution, with the test results rejecting the null hypothesis of Gibrat’s law. Independent and identical distributions are not...
متن کاملThe Dynamics of Firm Size Distribution*
The shape and evolution of firm size distribution has been studied in industrial organization and labor economics. The standard hypothesis of Gibrat’s law of proportionate effect posits that the rate of firm growth is size-independent. We test Gibrat’s law using a new empirical methodology and considering the underinvestigated Brazilian case. Quantile regression is used to estimate the evolutio...
متن کاملEmergence of power laws with different power-law exponents from reversal quasi-symmetry and Gibrat’s law
To explore the emergence of power laws in social and economic phenomena, the authors discuss the mechanism whereby reversal quasi-symmetry and Gibrat’s law lead to power laws with different powerlaw exponents. Reversal quasi-symmetry is invariance under the exchange of variables in the joint PDF (probability density function). Gibrat’s law means that the conditional PDF of the exchange rate of ...
